A hybrid heat pump water heater looks like an ordinary electric tank with a unit sitting on top, and that unit is the whole point. Instead of making heat from electricity, it moves heat: a compressor pulls warmth out of the surrounding air and puts it into the water. Moving heat takes far less electricity than making it, which is why a hybrid costs so much less to run than the plain electric tank it replaces.

The trade-off is that it needs somewhere to pull that heat from. A hybrid wants room around it and air that does not get too cold, so a garage, a basement or an open utility room usually suits it and a tight interior closet usually does not. It also costs more up front than a standard electric tank. Whether that pays back depends on the house and how much hot water it uses, and we will tell you honestly which way it falls for yours.

Hybrid Heat Pump Water Heaters

Hybrid heat pump water heaters are an energy-efficient alternative to traditional electric water heaters. Instead of relying only on electric heating elements, they use heat from the surrounding air to heat your water, helping reduce energy use and operating costs.

Jeremy’s Plumbing installs and replaces hybrid heat pump water heaters throughout Vancouver, WA and Clark County. We can help determine if a hybrid water heater is a good fit for your home, properly size the unit, remove your existing water heater, and complete the installation.

If you’re looking to upgrade an older electric water heater, a hybrid model can be a great option for long-term energy savings and reliable hot water.

Is a Hybrid Right for Your House?

Cheapest to run

A hybrid moves heat rather than making it, so it draws a fraction of the electricity a standard electric tank needs for the same hot water.

It needs air and space

The heat has to come from somewhere. A hybrid wants room around it and a reasonable temperature, which is why a garage, basement or open utility room suits it better than a tight closet.

It makes condensate

Pulling heat out of the air wrings moisture out of it, so a hybrid needs somewhere for that water to drain, the same way a furnace or an air conditioner does.

You will hear it run

There is a compressor and a fan, so it is not silent the way a plain electric tank is. In a garage or a basement most people never notice. Directly under a bedroom is worth thinking about first.

More up front

A hybrid costs more to buy than a standard electric tank. The running cost is where it earns that back, so how quickly depends on how much hot water the household actually uses.

We will tell you straight

If your space does not suit a heat pump, or the sums do not work for your household, we will say so rather than sell you one.

What a Hybrid Installation Includes

  • Checking the space suits a heat pump, for air volume and temperature
  • Sizing the unit to how your household uses hot water
  • Permit pulled for the installation
  • Draining and disconnecting the old water heater
  • Removal and disposal of the old unit
  • New unit set, leveled and seated on its pad
  • Water connections
  • Electrical connection made to the existing circuit
  • Condensate drain run to a suitable point
  • Temperature and pressure relief valve and discharge pipe
  • Seismic strapping to code
  • Filled, purged and tested
  • Operating mode set and the controls explained
  • Work area cleaned up

The Hybrid Brands We Install

  • Any brand you prefer: hybrids are the one type where we do not push a single make
  • No brand in mind: tell us the space and what the house needs and we will recommend one
  • Replacing a hybrid: we install and replace them whoever fitted the last one
  • Something specific in mind: ask, we have access to all of them

What Size Hybrid Do You Need?

A hybrid is usually sized a little larger than the tank it replaces, because the heat pump heats more gently than a bare element does. The upside is that the slow, efficient mode ends up doing almost all of the work.

1 to 2 people

A 50 gallon hybrid is usually plenty, and it will spend nearly all its time in the efficient heat pump mode.

3 to 4 people

50 to 65 gallons suits most family homes and keeps the back-up elements from cutting in often.

5 or more

65 to 80 gallons, so the heat pump keeps up without falling back on the elements every evening.

Not sure

Tell us how many bathrooms you have and where the unit would go. On a hybrid the space matters as much as the gallons.

Getting the Most Out of a Hybrid

A hybrid has one part a plain tank does not: an air filter over the heat pump. It pulls household air through all day, so that filter loads up with dust, and a blocked one makes the unit lean on its back-up elements, which is the expensive mode you bought it to avoid. Rinsing it every few months is the single most useful thing an owner can do.

The rest is the same as any tank. Sediment settles at the bottom, and the anode rod corrodes away so the tank does not, and both are worth attending to long before they turn into a problem. Keep the condensate drain clear as well, and the unit spends its life in the mode that saves you money.

How It Works

1. You get in touch

Tell us what you have now, and whether you are set on a hybrid or want the options weighed up.

2. We look at the space

Air volume, the temperature it sits in, where the condensate can go, and how the household uses hot water.

3. Free estimate

The unit, the work and the number, in writing, before anything starts.

4. We install

Old unit out and away, the hybrid set and connected, condensate drain run.

5. Test and set the mode

Filled, purged, tested, and the operating mode set so it runs efficiently from the first day.

Hybrid Water Heater Questions

How much does a hybrid actually save?
A hybrid uses a fraction of the electricity a standard electric tank uses for the same hot water, because it moves heat instead of making it. What that is worth in your house depends on your rates and how much hot water you use, so we would rather work it through against your actual setup than quote a figure that may not apply to you.

Where can a hybrid go?
Somewhere with room around it and air that does not get too cold. A garage, a basement or an open utility room usually works well. A tight interior closet usually does not, because the unit needs air to pull its heat from.

Is it noisy?
There is a compressor and a fan, so it is not silent. In a garage or a basement most people never notice it. Directly below a bedroom is worth a conversation before you commit.

Does it need a drain?
Yes. Pulling heat out of the air condenses moisture out of it, so a hybrid needs somewhere for that water to go, the same as a furnace or an air conditioner.

Do you pull the permit?
Yes. We pull the permit for the water heater installation. It is part of the job, not something we hand back to you.

Can a hybrid replace my gas water heater?
That is a bigger change than a like-for-like swap, because a hybrid is an electric appliance and the supply to it has to suit. Tell us what you have now and where it sits, and we will tell you what the change would involve before you decide.

How long does a hybrid last?
Much like a conventional tank, typically 8 to 12 years, and the same two things shorten it: sediment and a spent anode rod. The heat pump adds the air filter, which wants rinsing every few months.

Which brands do you install?
Any brand you prefer. Hybrids are the one type where we do not push a single make, so tell us what you have in mind, or ask us to recommend one for the space.

Do you warranty your work?
Yes. Water heater installations carry a two year warranty on our labor, double the one year minimum we put on every other job. The unit itself carries its manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand and model.

Do you charge for an estimate?
No. We give free estimates on all jobs.

Do you offer financing?
Yes. We offer financing through Affirm. The invoice we send you carries an option to pay over time instead of all at once, and Affirm sets the terms.
